I then remembered the dinner party scene in Episode 5 where she called out to her master, Bernkastel, in desperation after loosing to Battler in the study, and her master, in turn, appeared to subdue her and even possibly tamper with her, and the other pieces’, memory to cover up her outburst. I was then struck by a horrible thought; what if Bernkastel had actually tampered with her memory before her revival in Episode 8, to ensure that she would be the viscous, ruthless, bringer of death that we saw her as? The thought of Erika being forcefully stripped of her epiphany, her chance to develop as a person, and being reprogrammed into a cruel, selfish, monster, that not even her old friend Dlanor can redeem, literally brought me to tears. The fact that Bernkastel’s influence may very well have cost Erika her only remaining friend, and any chance she had at true happiness, makes her one of the most tragic characters, in my opinion
